The text
"I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come from the mouth of the dragon, from the mouth of the beast, and from the mouth of the false prophet. These were demonic spirits who performed signs. They went out to the kings of the whole world to assemble them for the battle on the great day of God the almighty" (Revelation 16:13–14).
The NABRE note recalls the plague of frogs on Egypt (Exodus 7:26–8:11) and identifies the false prophet with the second beast of Revelation 13. The spirits come from the mouths: they are what the dragon, the beast and the false prophet speak into the world, and their work is to gather the rulers of the earth against God.
Three candidates
I hold these names with less confidence than anything else on this site, and I leave them ungraded.
- From the mouth of the dragon: Elon Musk.
- From the mouth of the beast: Mike Johnson.
- From the mouth of the false prophet: Steve Witkoff.
As everywhere on this site, words and deeds are weighed, never souls (CCC 1861). Naming someone as a candidate is not a judgment of the person, and nothing here invites hostility toward any of them.
What the reading will need
Before any of these names can be graded, the reading will have to show three things for each, as the scorecard already records:
- Whose mouth. What each one says that serves the dragon, the beast or the false prophet in particular.
- Signs. Apparent wonders used to persuade rulers (16:14).
- The gathering. Each one drawing the world's rulers together against God and his people (16:14, 16).
The case against, already. The text calls the frogs "demonic spirits," not men. A reading that names three people has to show why spirits should be read as persons who speak, and not as the lying words themselves.
